Types of Information and the Basic Design of the Data \ Library

There are two broad types of information stored in the data library: basic information about individual proteins, which is stored in a PostgreSQL database, and more specialized information, which is currently still stored in HTML files. The information in the database is also available as HTML files (such as the protein home pages), which are updated from the underlying database regularly.

The rest of this document describes the procedure for submitting the basic information to the underlying PostgreSQL database. To submit more specialized information, simply e-mail the library administrator (cabp_admin@structbio.vanderbilt.edu). You can also e-mail the library administrator if you have any problems with the submission process.

Please read this document carefully before submitting information to the Data Library!

Philosophy of the Data Library and Reliance on the Broader Community

The EF-Hand Calcium-Binding Proteins Data Library is a highly curated library. All information is reviewed by a library administrator before it is entered into the underlying PostgreSQL database. However, it would not be possible for one person, or even a small group of people to find and input all new information about EF-Hand CaBPs in the literature, let alone to input the large volume of information already in the literature. For this reason, a form-based system that allows members of the larger community to submit information for the Data Library has been implemented. This will increase the completeness of the data stored in the library, and, since all data is still reviewed by the library administrator, the reliability of the data should not suffer.

The Data Library is only as complete and accurate as the larger community makes it! Please help this resource grow by submitting your data and data from the literature that you find to missing.

Clearly, the library administrator does not have time to carefully evaluate the scientific merit of each piece of information that is submitted to the library. Therefore, all information is required to be published in a peer reviewed journal before it is accepted into the library. The only exceptions are unpblishable types of information, such as additonal names and abbreviations. This will help to ensure that the data in the library is reliable. Also, since all pieces of information will be linked to the reference from which they were derived, the user of the library can easily go to the original literature to learn more about a particular bit of information, or to assess the reliability of the information.

Instructions for Completing the Forms for Data Submission

Please check your submission carefully for errors and typos! This will decrease the lag time between the completion of the forms and the appearance of the new information in the Data Library. Your information can not be accepted without a complete reference and information about the submittor (you). If you are uncomfortable with entering your e-mail address in the form for information about the submittor, please enter the library administrator's address (FILL IN), and e-mail your address to the library administrator. It will be stored privately in case there are any questions or problems with your submission, but will not be made public on the InfoCard associated with the data when it is stored in HTML format. However, your submission will NOT be processed if the administrator does not receive your e-mail address.

There are additional instructions on the forms for each type of information to be submitted. If you experience any difficulties, please contact the library administrator.

Submitting Information about Mutants

There are three special types of information that can be submitted about mutants (existence of a mutant, phenotypic effect of mutant, target activation by mutant). In addition, the majority of the other types of information, particularly the chemical and physical information types, can be submitted for a mutant just as for any other protein. Simply select Mutant in the field for type of protein on the submission forms.

Submitting references

There are two ways to submit a reference to the Data Library. The first, preferred method is to submit some piece of information from the reference, and submit the reference as required for most types of information using the automatic form-based system. It is also possible to submit only the reference, using the reference submission forms. Regardless of which forms are used, please check the accuracy of your submission carefully. This will help ensure that references are not duplicated in the database.
