Joe is on Sun, and the Sun /usr/bin/grep doesn't support -q. However,
/usr/xpg4/bin/grep does, so if you have /usr/xpg4/bin in the path before
/usr/bin, this problem goes away.

     grep - search a file for a pattern

SYNOPSIS
     /usr/bin/grep [ -bchilnsvw ] limited-regular-expression [
     filename ... ]

     /usr/xpg4/bin/grep [ -E | -F ] [ -c | -l | -q ] [
     -bhinsvwx ] -e pattern_list ... [ -f pattern_file ] ...
     [ file ... ]

     /usr/xpg4/bin/grep [ -E | -F ] [ -c | -l | -q ] [
     -bhinsvwx ] [ -e pattern_list ... ] -f pattern_file ... [

     /usr/xpg4/bin/grep [ -E | -F ] [ -c | -l | -q ] [
