Dear Ross:
Thanks for your quick reply. I wasn't interested necessarily in compiling in 64-bit mode for 64-bit sake - I just wanted to compile AMBER and compiling in 32-bit mode had failed. Anyway, as per your suggestions, I upgraded "ld" - actually, all of binutils - to 2.15.92.0.2 20040927, but kept my 32-bit config.h and this time compilation ripped along for quite a while until LEaP, where it died. Then I implemented the rest of your suggestions, using your config.h, unset'ing the MKL_HOME environment variable but compilation still failed, right here at the same place as with MKL_HOME set:

/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.a when searching for -lXt
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXt
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [xaLeap] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/amber8/src/leap/src/leap'
make[1]: *** [install] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/amber8/src/leap'
make: *** [serial] Error 2

It still seems like ld is still the source of the trouble, but now it's been upgraded to the latest version so I don't know what else to do. Maybe I need to upgrade my X11 libraries?
