You should consider CLIC from MandrakeSoft :

For hardware systems, in short, prefer opteron-based systems (the more
cpu you can get on your motherboard, the best will performances be : a
quadri cpu will be better than bi cpu), and very fast interconnecting
system (infiniband ou 10Gbit/s system).
Of course, as it is heavily depending on money, you can still use
athlons and gigabit interconnection.
One thing to never forget : warm is a danger, so pay attention to
refresh properly your room.
