I have some more data:

Thanks to Thomas Spraggins, his suggestion made me find two
things (I had the masters complete and short name already
in /etc/hosts):

When I start mpirun with the -nolocal option, cpi finishes
as desired, with 1 or 2 processors
the same is true if I run mpirun only on the node, np1 and
2 works.
This relieves me a bit, because before I feared my SMP-node
might be broken somehow.

I also found that tstmachines -v (which runs problemless on
the master) gives an error when run from the node:
The first two tests rsh and ls work fine, but the third
gives:

Unexpected response from pc2-117
--> bash /home/tom/tstfoo: Text file is busy
    The simple program test failed
