Comparison of Differences Between the Two Domains of Myosin ELC with the Differences Between the Two Domains of Calmodulin

A comparison of the helices of ELC N vs. C next to a similar comparison for CaM N vs. C. The four helices of the two domains of apo calmodulin are shown on the left. CaM-N is shown in light blue CaM-C is shown in dark blue. The four helices of the two domains of myosin essential light chain are shown on the right, with ELC-N in green and ELC-C in yellow. In both cases, the two domains were superimposed on the first and fourth helices. The helices were rendered as ribbons in InsightII (msi, San Diego, CA). PDB coordinates are 1CFC (apo calmodulin) and 1WDC (myosin essential light chain).

This graphic was figure 5 in the paper:
Nelson, M.R., W.J. Chazin. An Interaction-Based Analysis of Calcium-Induced Conformational Changes in Ca2+ Sensor Proteins (1998) Prot. Sci. 7, 270-282.

Several similar graphics exist. There is a black and white version that appeared in the "Calmodulin as a calcium sensor" chapter, and another color version that was created as a slide.
