Another option, which has worked for me, is to use a "linux live cd"
which is basically a version of linux that one may burn onto a cd/dvd
and then boot one's computer from.
There are many distributions of linux to choose from, so one might
want to get familiar with the options available.
Once linux is booted "live", then you connect through a terminal
application provided with the linux distro to the host using the "ssh -
X " or "ssh -Y" methods mentioned in the previous responses.
