LAM (I use version 7.1.3) seems to be one of the few distributions that
compiles smoothly under linux. I've also used the windows binary
distributions from MPICH2, but I was unable to get them to compile myself.
Similarly, no luck with mpich or openMPI. Of course, others may be smarter,
luckier, or more persistent that I was....

With only 4 cpus, lam should run fine. Here are the configure flags that I
used:

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/parallel/lam --disable-tv-queue
--without-mpi2cpp --without-profiling --without-romio FC=g95
FFLAGS=-fno-second-underscore

....hope this helps....dac
