Hi Esther,

Perhaps try unmounting the drive, then re-mount it using another filesystem
type (with the "-t file_system" option). Do you get any error messages?
Does dmesg tell you anything? Are you listing the directory contents in
/mnt/external as root or your local user? Can you see files on the drive if
you connect it to another OS? Also, it is possible to ruin your formatting
if you unplug the usb drive in linux without unmounting it first. Did you
do that at all? Please give as much detail as possible.
