HI Esther,

After it is mounted, what do you see from "ls /mnt/external" ? Also, what
is the output of the "mount" command with no arguments (it will show all
mounted devices on your system). If you see that the drive is really
mounted, using root you may want to give reading permissions to all files in
that directory like: "chmod -R a+r /mnt/external". One more thing, if you
plan on using this drive frequently, you may want to add the following line
in your /etc/fstab:

/dev/sdb1 /mnt/external vfat
ro,auto,user 0 0

This will automount it, and give users mounting, but read-only access.

I would suggest that you give the output of all the failed commands to the
list if you are still having problems. This will give all us linux guru's a
little guidance when we try to suggest troubleshooting techniques.
