In those good-old days, this could be achieved relatively easily using
perftrace, flowtrace, and other performance monitoring utility programs
on supercomputers. There is a similar utility program on Linux, called
gprof which might be helpful to you. I must admit that I have not used
gprof myself. But it appears to be an interesting lead.
