We are using RedHat 7.3 with 2.4.20 kernel dropped in for beowulf nodes
(master node is running default redhat kernel which comes with 7.3). I
wouldn't recommend higher versions of RedHat due to some issues with gcc
compiler. I am sure you can use any other linux distribution and it'll
work, so use whichever one you're comfortable with. Check also the link
"Linux-based clusters" on amber webpage. It needs to be updated but
there is still some helpful information on amber and beowulf clusters.
