Research Spotlight: Hassane Mchaourab and Jens Meiler

CSB Researchers Hassane Mchaourab, Ph.D., Jens Meiler, Ph.D., and colleagues report the dynamics of a drug resistance transporter in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Antibiotic resistance impedes treatment of bacterial infections, and contributing to this resistance are proteins, such as the Escherichia coli EmrE transporter.

The research team combined double electron-electron resonance spectroscopy and molecular modeling to explore EmrE dynamics, noting that EmrE assumes different shapes when it binds a proton, a substrate or neither. The structural model of transport offers a novel perspective on proton-coupled multidrug transport.
