CSB Research Spotlight - Hassane Mchaourab

CSB researcher Hassane Mchaourab, Ph.D., and his research team have been featured in the VUMC Reporter for their new view of transporter dynamics.

The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, identifies two coupling mechanisms for substrate binding and release using an electron paramagnetic spectroscopy method called double electron-electron resonance or DEER.

Dr. Mchaourab, a national leader in the study of protein “dynamics,” shows the importance of transporters as drug targets because they regulate the supply of essential signaling molecules such as neurotransmitters. The findings may aid in the development of more precise and effective treatments for depression.
