    Music City, USA

For information about Nashville (restaurants, entertainment, etc.) visit http://nashville.citysearch.com.

Nashville's an exciting place to be, no matter who you are. We're not all country music (although we have plenty of that, too!). No matter your interests you'll have fun in this town. Angelina Jolie is known to show up at the local heath food store, Wild Oats Market. You might see K.T. Oslin driving next to you in traffic. Marie Osmond lives right outside town.

    Favorite Haunts

    • The Exit/In and The End - This pair of dives are as legendary in underground rock as the Grand Ole Opry and Bluebird Cafe are in country music. Some of today's most popular rock bands stopped by the Exit/In on their way to fame. Billy Crystal used to do stand-up there before anyone knew his name. It's also located in Nashville's hippest neighborhood, the Elliston Place area around 22nd Avenue, a quick walk from Vanderbilt University.
    • Cafe Coco - Nashville's only 24-hour coffee house and restaurant, Coco's is located immediately behind the Exit/In and is the place to be after a show. The java is excellent as are the food and the ambience. The place is unique, but not exclusive. You will feel welcome.
    • 3rd and Lindsley Bar & Grill - Located at the corner of 3rd and Lindsley just south of Broadway in downtown Nashville this dive remains one of Nashville's best kept secrets, well off of tourist row.
      • Each Wednesday night local Jazz legends the Wooten Brothers show up at 9:30PM and for a nominal cover of $4 play well past midnight. If you want to experience today's most innovative jazz, this is the hippest combo around.
      • On the weekends watch out for 3rd and Lindsley regular Jonell Mosser and Enough Rope. Lead vocalist Jonell Mosser is a dead ringer for Janis Joplin and has the pipes to match. If she's playing, don't miss it.
    • 12th & Porter, Cafe 123, The Pub of Love - Located immediately north of Broadway in downtown Nashville, these three sister restaurants are are a hit with locals and tourists alike. After dark these restaurants offer some of Nashville's best food as well as live jazz, rock, and blues.
    • Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar - Nestled in legendary Printers' Alley, just north of Broadway on Church between 3rd and 4th, this dive offers Nashville's best New Orleans style blues. House band Stacy Mitchhart and Blues You Can Use consistently deliver outstanding performances.
    • Lonnie's Western Room & Karaoke Bar - Perhaps the oldest extant country western karaoke bar known, this dive in legendary Printers' Alley is one of the most fun places to spend a night in the whole of Nashville. The bartenders are aspiring singers who oblige with karaoke renditions of modern and classic country tunes alongside the bar's more adventurous clientele. It's not uncommon to see Music Row executives, engineers and producers hanging out at Lonnie's with a bucket of beer scouting the talent. Most every famous musician to come out of Nashville has worked at Lonnie's in some capacity or another and their names are listed on a large plaque by the entryway. All patrons are invited to sign up to sing a song and for a nominal fee you can take home a videotape of yourself singing in Nashville.

What's going on the week(end) of the symposium?

Hearing a concert in the Ryman is an experience one never forgets.
    • The Grand Ole Opry
September 20th @ 6:30PM and September 21st @ 6:30PM and 9:30PM. Whether a memory from your childhood radio or something altogether new to you, there are few musical experiences akin to seeing the Grand Ole Opry live. Don't miss out.
