Generally an error--as pointed out by Mr. Case--is indicative of your MIPS compiler package not being installed (or at least not correctly). Another problem to compound the situation is that you seek to use the GNU compilers. While I'm not entirely sure if they'll do the job (SGI's can be funny little creatures), in theory, all you would have to do is change your system's aliases for the MIPS compilers to point to their respective GNU compilers using either the "set" or "setenv" commands, depending on your choice of unix shell.
Another suggestion, which I have done, is to call SGI and fuss that they didn't tell you that their operating system does not include their proprietary compiler suite. Through some smooth talking, they will send you a free MIPS compiler package.
Installation of the proprietary compilers is a cakewalk using the "inst" prompt, which any of their tech-support representatives could walk you through.
Hopefully this sheds some light on your problem!
