You could try aliasing gcc to gcc-4.0.

alias gcc=gcc-4.0

Alternatively you could create a link to gcc-4.0 in /usr/bin

cd /usr/bin
ln -s gcc /locationofgcc40/gcc-4.0

Then see if this works.
