...You are still configuring compiler options for an Itanium system.
For your Xeons, say
"./configure -p4 -static ifort".
Whether or not you create 64 bit (x86_64 aka emt64) binaries
is decided by which compiler you use (e.g. /opt/intel_fce_80 for 64 bit
vs. /opt/intel_fc_80 for 32 bit).

...it was probably compiled for an entirely different architecture.

As a precaution: After the next (correct) 'configure',
make sure that the MKL libraries is looked for in
/opt/intel/mkl/8.0/lib/em64t, not in /opt/intel/mkl/8.0/lib/64.
