I have long suspected (believed?) that xleap is not 64-bit clean, so that
a ordinary user should probably either (a) use a 32-bit version; or (b) use
tleap (which as far as I know is OK on 64-bit systems).

Of course, if anybody knows how to fix this, that would be great. But I think
it need changes to the code itself, not just tweaks to the Makefile. If there
is some enterprising Comp. Sci. student out there who wants to make a name for
herself, here is a nice opportunity...
